What vehicles do ThinkCar scanners support?

ThinkCar scanners provide comprehensive OBD2 diagnostics for over 10,000 vehicle models. The Platinum Professional series covers all OBD2-compliant vehicles sold in the United States from 1996 to present, including domestic (GM, Ford, Chrysler/Stellantis), Asian (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai/Kia, Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi), and European (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen/Audi, Volvo, Land Rover, Porsche) manufacturers.

Coverage includes full-system diagnostics (engine, transmission, ABS, SRS, TPMS, body control, HVAC, infotainment, ADAS, and more), not just basic powertrain codes. What is the difference between the Platinum series and the ThinkScan series?

The Platinum Professional series is designed for full-time professional shops. These scanners offer full-system bi-directional diagnostics, meaning you can not only read data from every module in the vehicle, but also send commands—actuate solenoids, run output tests, program keys, perform ECU coding, and more. Platinum scanners also feature CAN FD/DoIP support for 2025+ vehicles and AI-powered diagnostic guidance.

The ThinkScan series is built for technicians who need solid diagnostic capability with essential service functions like oil reset, EPB, SAS, DPF regeneration, and throttle adaptation. These scanners read and clear codes across major systems and perform the resets that keep your shop moving. They are an excellent choice for shops that handle bread-and-butter maintenance and repair work.

Both series include lifetime free software updates. The main differences are the depth of bi-directional control, ECU coding capability, and advanced protocol support (CAN FD/DoIP).

What is CAN FD and why does it matter?

CAN FD (Controller Area Network with Flexible Data-rate) is the next-generation vehicle communication protocol that replaces the classic CAN bus used in vehicles since the 1990s. CAN FD supports faster data transfer speeds and larger data packets, which modern vehicles require for their increasingly complex electronic architectures.

Starting with the 2025 model year, many manufacturers—including GM, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, and several European brands—are transitioning to CAN FD exclusively. If your scan tool does not support CAN FD, it will not be able to communicate with these vehicles at all. It is not a matter of reduced functionality; the tool simply will not connect.

Do ThinkCar scanners work on heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles?

Select ThinkCar Platinum models offer heavy-duty commercial vehicle diagnostics covering major brands such as Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Paccar, International/Navistar, Volvo Trucks, Mack, Hino, and Isuzu. Heavy-duty capability includes engine diagnostics, DPF regeneration, aftertreatment system diagnostics, and fault code analysis.

Check the specifications on individual product pages to confirm heavy-duty support for the specific model you are considering. Not all Platinum scanners include HD capability—it depends on the specific unit and software package.

Can I use a ThinkCar scanner for ADAS calibration?

ThinkCar Platinum scanners support ADAS-related diagnostic functions including reading and clearing ADAS fault codes, viewing ADAS sensor data, and performing certain ADAS resets and calibrations that are software-based (static calibrations). For full dynamic and static ADAS calibration that requires physical targets and frames, you will need a dedicated ADAS calibration system in addition to your scan tool. The ThinkCar scanner handles the software side of the calibration process.

Are software updates really free for life?

Yes. Every ThinkCar scanner includes lifetime free software updates. This is not a limited-time promotion or a first-year perk—it is a permanent feature of every ThinkCar product. When ThinkCar releases new vehicle coverage, adds diagnostic functions, or improves the user interface, you receive the update at no charge.

For context, Snap-on charges approximately $600 to $1,200 per year for software updates. Autel charges $400 to $800 per year after the first year. Launch charges $300 to $600 per year. Over a typical five-year tool lifecycle, ThinkCar saves you $1,500 to $6,000 in update fees alone.

How do I update my ThinkCar scanner?

ThinkCar scanners update directly over Wi-Fi. Connect your scanner to your shop’s Wi-Fi network, navigate to the update section in the settings menu, and tap “Check for Updates.” The scanner will download and install any available updates automatically. The process typically takes 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the update and your internet speed.

We recommend checking for updates monthly to ensure you always have the latest vehicle coverage and diagnostic functions.

What is AI diagnostics and which models have it?

ThinkCar’s AI diagnostic engine is an intelligent repair guidance system built into select Platinum Professional scanners. When you pull a diagnostic trouble code, the AI engine cross-references it against millions of verified repair records to provide probable causes ranked by likelihood, recommended repair procedures, related technical service bulletins (TSBs), and relevant wiring diagrams.

Think of it as having a master technician’s experience built into your scan tool. Instead of spending 20 minutes searching forums or looking up TSBs manually, the AI delivers actionable diagnostic guidance in seconds. AI diagnostics is available on Platinum series models—check individual product pages for confirmation.

Ordering & Shipping

How long does shipping take?

Standard shipping delivers within 3 to 5 business days to addresses within the contiguous United States. Express shipping options are available at checkout for faster delivery. Orders placed before 2:00 PM Eastern Time on business days typically ship the same day.

Shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and US territories is available but may take additional time. We currently ship within the United States only.

Is shipping free?

Yes, all orders over $500 ship free via standard ground shipping within the contiguous United States. Since most ThinkCar scanners are priced above $500, the majority of our orders qualify for free shipping automatically. Orders under $500 (typically accessories and add-ons) have a flat-rate shipping fee calculated at checkout.

Do you ship internationally?

At this time, we ship within the United States only, including all 50 states and US territories. We do not currently offer international shipping. If you are located outside the US, please contact ThinkCar directly through their global website for distributor information in your region.

Returns & Warranty

What is your return policy?

We offer a 30-day return policy on all products. If you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, you may return it within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. The product must be in its original packaging, in like-new condition, with all included accessories. Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer unless the return is due to a defect or an error on our part.

What does the warranty cover?

All ThinkCar diagnostic tools are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Warranty periods vary by product—most scanners carry a one-year warranty, while select Platinum models offer extended coverage. Specific warranty terms are listed on each product page.

The warranty covers hardware defects, display failures, non-functioning ports and connectors, and software issues attributable to the manufacturer. It does not cover physical damage from drops or impacts, water damage, unauthorized disassembly, or damage caused by use with incompatible power sources.

Because we are an authorized distributor, your warranty claim is handled domestically. You contact us, we coordinate with ThinkCar, and we get your tool repaired or replaced.

What if my scanner arrives damaged?

If your scanner arrives damaged due to shipping, contact us immediately with photos of the packaging and the damage. We will arrange a replacement shipment at no charge to you, and we will handle the carrier claim on our end. Do not discard the original packaging until the issue is fully resolved.

Do I need to buy additional software or modules separately?

No. Every ThinkCar scanner ships with its full software suite activated. There are no locked features that require additional purchases to unlock. Unlike some competitors that sell a base tool and then charge extra for individual vehicle brand packages or advanced functions, ThinkCar includes everything in the box price. The only optional purchases are physical accessories and, for shops that want it, extended warranty coverage.
